Duke Pennell: 1921-2007

Click to enlargeLongtime AMA race official George "Duke" Pennell died Sunday, December 2. He was 86.

Pennell is best known for being an AMA starter for better than 50 years. He flagged nearly every major AMA national race from the late 1940s to the late 1990s, despite a racing injury that left his left arm immobile.

In 1987, Pennell and his wife, Bee Gee, were presented the prestigious Dud Perkins Award for their dedication to motorcycling. Duke Pennell was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2003.
